This online keyboard test checks, in real time, whether every key on your physical keyboard is being received by your browser. It supports both ANSI/US and ABNT2 layouts, includes an anti-ghosting mode to reveal rollover limits, and measures the time between consecutive keypresses. Click on the virtual keyboard and start pressing: each key lights up when detected and stays marked as tested after you release it.

How to use the keyboard test

There is nothing to install. Open the page in your browser, place the cursor over the virtual keyboard, and press each key on your physical keyboard one at a time. Keys that light up blue are being received correctly. When you release a key it stays marked as tested. Use theReset button to start a new test, or Clear history if you only want to wipe the event log without losing your progress.

To test a laptop keyboard, keep the cursor over the page and press the keys normally. On desktops the same procedure works for both USB and Bluetooth keyboards. On mobile devices you must attach a physical keyboard, since the on-screen keyboard does not produce events that the browser can capture.

How to test an ANSI/US keyboard

The ANSI/US layout is the standard on most keyboards sold outside Brazil and differs from ABNT2 mainly by placing the Ç key elsewhere and adding a dedicated left Shift. Selecting ANSI / USdisplays the matching keymap so you can verify every key in its expected position. Don't forget the numpad block if your keyboard has one — it is included in the testable key count.

How keyboard ghosting tests work

Switch to Anti-ghosting mode and the panel shows the maximum number of keys pressed at once and your current combination. Press several keys simultaneously — for exampleShift + A + S — and watch whether every key lights up. If one fails to register, the keyboard has a rollover limit on that specific combination. This is a physical matrix limitation, not necessarily a defect: even gaming keyboards commonly advertise values such as 6-key rollover or N-key rollover.

Stuck, repeated and unresponsive keys

The side panel tracks three useful signals: stuck keys, rapid repeats and a recent event log. If a key keeps showing as Possible stuck after you release it, try the keyboard on another computer to rule out a software issue. If the behaviour persists, the cause is likely mechanical — debris, worn switches or oxidised contacts. The tester is only a first diagnostic step and does not replace a proper hardware inspection.

Desktop and laptop compatibility

The test runs on desktops and laptops running Windows, macOS or Linux, on any up-to-date browser. On compact laptops or keyboards with extra function keys, the browser uses its standard code mapping, so the visual position may differ slightly while each key remains uniquely identified. Gaming keyboards with macros or RGB lighting are received as standard input devices, with no loss of functionality.

Browser limitations

Browsers don't have direct hardware access: they rely on the operating system to deliver key events. That means some keys may not register even on a perfectly healthy keyboard. The Fn key, for instance, is rarely exposed to the browser. Print Screen is often captured by the system before reaching the page. Shortcuts likeCtrl+W, Ctrl+R and Ctrl+T are intentionally left to the browser so they don't interfere with navigation.

Another important limitation: the timings shown reflect the delay perceived by the browser, not the real hardware latency. Switching windows, leaving the tab in the background, or heavy CPU load can inflate the numbers you see on screen.

Privacy

No key, character or text is uploaded to external servers. All processing happens locally in your browser, and no images, words or full sentences are recorded. The only preferences stored locally are the theme (light/dark), the sound toggle, and the mobile menu state — all kept in your own device's localStorage.

Do I need to install anything to run the keyboard test?

No. The tester runs entirely in your browser. Just open the page, click on the virtual keyboard, and start pressing keys. No download, plugin, or administrator permission is required.

Which browsers does the keyboard tester support?

It works on modern browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Brave, on Windows, macOS, and Linux. On mobile devices you need to attach a physical keyboard over USB or Bluetooth, since the on-screen keyboard does not generate events that the browser can capture.

Does the keyboard test record what I type?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Pressed keys are shown only on your own screen, and no characters, words, or full sentences are sent to any server, analytics tool, or third party.

Why do the Fn and Print Screen keys often not respond?

Those keys are usually intercepted by the operating system or the keyboard firmware before they reach the browser. Print Screen triggers system capture tools, and Fn behaves differently on every manufacturer. Even on a perfectly healthy keyboard, these codes may not show up as pressed.

Does this test prove that my keyboard is 100% working?

No. The browser operates above the hardware layer and does not have direct access to every keyboard function. The result shows how the operating system and browser receive events, but it cannot guarantee electrical, mechanical, or firmware behaviour.
